October 2012: Partnership co-lead Mieke Koehoorn will speak about differences in disability duration for work-related injuries at the Advancing Excellence in Gender, Sex and Health Research conference in Montreal on Oct. 30. Read more about our work in this area.

Research Training Award success

New research coordinator

September 2012: We are pleased to welcome Billy Quirke as a new Partnership research coordinator. Billy will be evaluating the effectiveness of health and safety regulations.

Mesothelioma compensation study recruitment update

September 2012: We have completed recruitment of patients and family members for a study about mesothelioma compensation, but we are still seeking physician participants.

New CIHR grant: Gender, Sex, and Work Injury

July 2012: The Partnership has been successful in CIHR’s latest operating grant competition. Three years of funding has been secured to investigate differences in workers’ compensation experiences by sex and gender.

Serious workplace injuries

June 2012: Partnership research published in PLoS ONE finds that older women are more prone to serious injury in the workplace. Partnership work presented at CARWH in Vancouver

June 2012: Partnership co-lead Mieke Koehoorn gave a keynote presentation about using existing data for work and health research and a presentation about gender differences in disability duration at the Canadian Association for Research on Work and Health conference. Partnership researchers also presented preliminary results on wood dust exposure and mesothelioma compensation.

2012 Walk for Truth – Asbestos Kills

May 2012: The Asbestos-related Research, Education and Advocacy Fund (AREA Fund) is hosting the Walk for Truth on June 10 in Powell River, BC, to raise awareness of asbestos-related disease.

May 2012: A feature article in the May/June edition reports on Partnership work on serious injuries that found that older women working in health care are among those most vulnerable. More on serious injuries.
